Return of Focus Hocus Pocus
I’ve been getting correspondence from people saying that I need to respond to Tom Edsall channeling Chuck Schumer on how health reform was a mistake, Obama should have focused on the economy.
The thing is, I responded to this argument four years ago, and everything I said then still applies. When people say that Obama should have “focused” on the economy, what, specifically, are they saying he should have done? Enacted a bigger stimulus? Maybe he could have done that at the very beginning, but that wouldn’t have conflicted with the effort to pass health reform — and anyway, I don’t hear many of the “focus” types saying that. So what do they mean? Obama should have gone around squinting and saying “I’m focused on the economy”? What would that have done?
Look, governing is not just theater. For sure the weakness of the recovery has hurt Democrats. But “focusing”, whatever that means, wouldn’t have delivered more job growth. What should Obama have done that he actually could have done in the face of scorched-earth Republican opposition? And how, if at all, did health reform stand in the way of doing whatever it is you’re saying he should have done?
I have seen no answer to these questions.

Mi sta arrivando corrispondenza da persone che devo rispondere a Tom Edsall [2] che dà credito a Chuck Schumer a proposito del fatto che la riforma sanitaria sia stata un errore e che Obama avrebbe dovuto concentrarsi sull’economia.
Il punto è che ho risposto quattro anni fa a questo argomento, e tutto quello che dissi allora è ancora valido. Quando la gente dice che Obama avrebbe dovuto “concentrarsi” sull’economia, cosa intende in particolare che dovrebbe aver fatto? Legiferato per misure di sostegno maggiori? Egli forse avrebbe potuto farlo proprio agli inizi, ma non sarebbe stato in conflitto con lo sforzo per approvare la riforma sanitaria – e, in ogni modo, non se sentono molti soggetti della tesi del “concentrarsi” che affermano questo. Dunque, cosa si intende? Obama avrebbe dovuto andare in giro con gli occhi torvi e dire: “Sono concentrato sull’economia”? Che cosa sarebbe successo in quel caso?
Si badi, governare non è solo teatro. Di certo la debolezza della ripresa ha danneggiato i democratici. Ma la “concentrazione”, qualsiasi cosa significhi, non avrebbe prodotto una crescita maggiore di posti di lavoro. Cosa avrebbe dovuto fare Obama che davvero potesse fare a fronte della opposizione da terra-bruciata dei repubblicani? E come, anche ammesso, la riforma sanitaria sarebbe stata un ostacolo a fare ciò che si pensa avrebbe dovuto fare, qualsiasi cosa fosse?
Non ho trovato alcuna risposta a queste domande.
[1] “Abracadabra” è un po’ l’equivalente della frase magica “focus hocus pocus”.
[2] Altro editorialista del New York Times che di recente ha scritto un commento sulle posizioni del Senatore democratico Schumer sulla riforma sanitaria. Lo stesso tema era l’oggetto dell’articolo di Krugman del 4 dicembre (“I democratici contro la riforma”), qua tradotto.
