I didn’t watch the SOTU — I probably wouldn’t have even if I had been on the right side of the Pacific. But I’m reading some of the reporting; and because evil is more interesting than good, I think the most revealing remarks actually came from Joni Ernst’s GOP reply.
Not that she offered a realistic alternative — but that’s the point. As far as anyone can tell, the dominant Republican economic idea is to license the Keystone pipeline. And that’s ridiculous.
The standard estimate — accepted by pipeline advocates — is that building the pipeline would temporarily add 42,000 jobs, the vast bulk of which would go away after two years. That’s in an economy with 140 million workers. So Keystone would temporarily increase US employment by 0.03, that’s right, 0.03 percent. Or to put it another way: given the recent pace of job creation, the number one GOP policy priority, basically the only job measure the party has to offer, would create about as many jobs as the Obama recovery is adding every five days.
So there’s a mystery here. Do Republicans not know this? (I’m not a scientist, man — or a mathematician.) Do they know it but count on the innumeracy of voters, having found that pipelines sound good to focus groups?
In other news, Ernst spoke about Obamacare as a failed policy — because a sharp drop in the number of uninsured and a marked slowdown in health costs are clear evidence of failure. Actually, in this case I suspect that Republicans truly are ignorant — Fox News only reports bad news, so if that’s what you watch you just know that things are going badly.

Non ho visto il Discorso sulla Stato dell’Unione – probabilmente non l’avrei visto neanche fossi stato sulla sponda giusta del Pacifico. Ma sto leggendo un po’ di resoconti; e poiché il male è più interessante del bene, penso che le osservazioni più rivelatrici vengano effettivamente dalla replica del Partito Repubblicano con Joni Ernst [2].
Non che ella abbia offerto una alternativa realistica – ma il punto è lì. Per quello che si può dire, l’idea economica dominante del Partito Repubblicano è licenziare l’oleodotto Keystone. E questo è ridicolo.
La stima più accreditata – accettata dai sostenitori dell’oleodotto – è che la costruzione dell’infrastruttura aumenterebbe i posti di lavoro temporaneamente di 42.000 unità, gran parte dei quali se ne andrebbero via dopo due anni. Questo in un’economia con 140 milioni di lavoratori. Dunque, Keystone aumenterebbe temporaneamente l’occupazione degli Stati Uniti dello 0,03 – proprio così – dello 0,03 per cento. O, per dirla diversamente: dato il recente ritmo nella creazione di posti di lavoro, la priorità numero uno del programma del Partito Repubblicano, fondamentalmente l’unica misura in materia di occupazione che il partito ha da offrire, sarebbe creare circa gli stessi posti di lavoro che la ripresa di Obama sta aggiungendo ogni cinque giorni.
Dunque, siamo dinanzi ad un mistero. I repubblicani non lo sanno? (io non sono un uomo di scienza o un matematico) Oppure lo sanno, ma fanno affidamento sulla scarsa propensione alla matematica degli elettori, avendo scoperto che l’oleodotto suona bene ai gruppi di ascolto?
Secondo altri resoconti, la Ernst ha parlato della riforma sanitaria di Obama come di una politica fallita – perché una brusca caduta nel numero dei non assicurati ed un marcato rallentamento dei costi sanitari sono una prova evidente di fallimento. In effetti, in questo caso ho il sospetto che i repubblicani siano realmente ignoranti – Fox News fornisce solo le cattive notizie, cosicché se è quello ciò che guardate, sapete soltanto che le cose stanno andando male.
[1] Ovvero, hanno solo l’oleodotto in testa (penso!).
[2] E’ prassi che i discorsi presidenziali sullo Stato dell’Unione abbiano una replica da parte del Partito che non esprime il Presidente. In questo caso il compito è stato affidato ad una Senatrice repubblicana dello Iowa, che di mestiere era tenente colonnello dell’Esercito, appunto Joni Ernst.
