Britain’s Success Story
Simon Wren-Lewis asks how good British economic recovery — which is being touted as a wonderful success story — really has been. Not very, he says. Indeed. Here’s a comparison of the UK with two other major economies since 2007:
Austerity triumphant. Or, maybe not.
Part of this is the growth rate fallacy — no matter how badly an economy has done over an extended period, you proclaim success after a year or two of good growth. As Wren-Lewis likes to say, on this basis the ideal policy is to shut half the economy down for a while, then start it up again — that way you get 100 percent growth. Also, hitting yourself in the head with a baseball bat is a great idea, because it feels good when you stop.
But surely we’re also seeing the ideological bias of many in the news media. France is supposed to be a terrible failure, because it still believes in a strong welfare state — and so it is reported as a failure, never mind the numbers. Austerity in Britain is politically approved, so it is pronounced a success on the shakiest of grounds.
It’s all pretty depressing.

Simon Wren-Lewis si chiede quanto sia stata davvero buona la ripresa dell’economia britannica – che viene pubblicizzata come una meravigliosa storia di successo. Non molto, sostiene. Per davvero. Ecco un confronto del Regno Unito con due altre importanti economie a partire dal 2007:

In parte questo dipende dalla fallacia del tasso di crescita – non conta quanto un’economia sia andata male per un periodo prolungato, si proclama il successo dopo un anno o due di crescita positiva. Come piace dire a Wren-Lewis, su questa base la politica ideale sarebbe chiudere metà dell’economia per un certo periodo, poi farla ripartire – in quel modo si avrebbe una crescita del 100 per cento. Oppure, battersi una mazza da baseball sul capo è una grande idea, perché ci si sente bene quando si smette.
Ma certamente siamo anche in presenza del pregiudizio ideologico di vari media. Si suppone che la Francia sia un terribile fallimento, perché ancora crede in uno stato assistenziale forte – e dunque se ne parla come di un fallimento, a prescindere dai dati. L’austerità in Inghilterra viene politicamente approvata, cosicché viene enunciata come un successo su basi assolutamente traballanti.
E’ tutto abbastanza deprimente.
