Gail Collins has a characteristically hilarious piece about Chris Christie, who went around bellowing about his fiscal responsibleness, then, as soon as the question arose about how to pay for something he agreed to, welshed on the deal.
Gail thinks this is the end of Christie’s presidential ambitions; I think this gives his party too much credit for caring about reality. Christie probably is toast, but not because he has shown himself fiscally irresponsible and untrustworthy. Instead, he apparently doesn’t know when to stop bellowing — you do need to make nice to the big money, and he hasn’t.
But in any case, there’s a larger point: the Christie affair is yet another demonstration that there are no true fiscal hawks on the right, only deficit peacocks who strut around and preen themselves on their supposed fiscal virtue, but never show themselves willing to make any sacrifices for the cause.
In fact, all the supposed alarm about deficits ends up being a club such people use to slash benefits for workers and the poor; as soon as it becomes a question of taxes on the rich, they suddenly lose interest.
The fading of Chris Christie will lower the decibel level, but nothing else will change.

Gail Collins scrive un articolo come al solito divertentissimo su Chris Christie [1], che è andato in giro a strepitare sulla sua responsabilità nei conti pubblici, e poi, appena è emersa la questione di come pagare per qualcosa su cui aveva concordato, si è rimangiato l’impegno.
Gail pensa che questa sia la fine delle ambizioni presidenziali di Christie; io penso che in questo modo si dia troppo credito al suo partito di preoccuparsi della realtà. Probabilmente Christie è finito, ma non perché si sia mostrato irresponsabile e inaffidabile. Piuttosto, pare che non sappia quando è il momento di smetterla di vociare – con i ricchi c’è bisogno di essere aggraziati, e lui non lo è.
Ma in ogni caso, c’è un aspetto più generale: la faccenda di Christie è una ennesima dimostrazione che non ci sono veri falchi dei conti pubblici a destra, soltanto pavoni del deficit che vanno in giro impettiti e si danno arie sulle loro supposte virtù nella finanza pubblica, ma non si sono mai mostrati disponibili a fare nessun sacrificio per la causa.
In sostanza, tutto il presunto allarmismo sui deficit finisce con l’essere una clava che tali individui utilizzano per abbattere i sussidi ai lavoratori ed ai poveri; appena diventa una questione di tasse per i ricchi, perdono improvvisamente interesse.
Il declino di Chris Christie abbasserà il livello dei decibel, ma non cambierà nient’altro.
[1] Repubblicano, attuale Governatore del New Jersey, abbastanza noto per sommarietà e goffaggine.
