Wall Street Now Hates Democrats

Over at Vox, Jonathan Allen notes that Hillary Clinton, sometimes derided on the left as doing Wall Street’s bidding, is actually getting a lot less Wall Street money than people think. Allen notes that during her husband’s administration Clinton was known for her relative antipathy toward financial types, which may be part of the story. But you should also put this in the context of finance’s hard turn against Democrats in general. In 2004, facing an election whose outcome was uncertain, finance and insurance split its donations almost equally between the parties; in 2012 it gave well over twice as much to Republicans as to Democrats.
The reason is, of course, financial reform. Anyone who tells you that reform was meaningless and that there’s no difference between the parties should follow the money, which thinks that there is a big difference indeed.

Su Vox, Jonathan Allen nota che Hillary Clinton, talvolta derisa a sinistra per le offerte che fa a Wall Street, sta affettivamente ottenendo molti meno soldi di Wall Street di quanto si pensi. Allen osserva che, durante la Amministrazione di suo marito, la Clinton era nota per la sua relativa antipatia verso i soggetti della finanza, e questa può essere una parziale spiegazione. Ma più in generale si dovrebbe anche collocare questa notizia nel contesto del forte spostamento a danno dei democratici del mondo della finanza. Nel 2004, a fronte di elezioni il cui esito era incerto, la finanza e il settore assicurativo distribuirono le loro donazioni quasi egualmente tra i due partiti; nel 2012 diedero ai repubblicani ben più del doppio che ai democratici.
La ragione, ovviamente, è la riforma finanziaria. Chiunque vi racconti che quella riforma è stata insignificante e che non c’è differenza tra i due partiti, dovrebbe star dietro al capitale, che in effetti ritiene che ci sia una grande differenza.
