Serious Delusions
Greg Sargent mocks pundits declaring that the attacks in Paris will finally convince Republican primary voters that they need to get serious, and deflate the Trump/Carson bubble. This time it will really happen!
Or not.
As Sargent says, these pundits have been wrong again and again — and with holidays coming up and then the start of actual voting, there isn’t much time for bubble-deflation left. But there’s more.
For one thing, who exactly are the serious candidates on national security? Jeb!, who thinks that a relative handful of terrorists can destroy the West, one rock concert at a time? Rubio, who mumbled something about a clash of civilizations?
For another, pretty much the same people claiming that it’s time to get serious are attacking Democrats for … not using the right catchphrases, out of petty concerns like trying not to insult a whole religion. Say it loud and proud: radicalIslamradicalIslamradicalIslam. See? Terrorism defeated.
Finally, remember how we got serious after 9/11?
Given what we’ve seen in the past, this might even favor Trump, who can yell “You’re fired!” at the terrorists, or Carson, who might be able to defeat them with the help of Klingon Jesus.

Greg Sargent ironizza sugli esperti che dichiarano che gli attacchi a Parigi convinceranno finalmente gli elettori delle primarie americane che hanno bisogno di diventare seri e di sgonfiare la bolla dei Trump e dei Carson. Questa volta accadrà veramente!
O forse no.
Come dice Sargent, questi commentatori hanno avuto torto ripetutamente – e con le vacanze in arrivo e poi con la partenza delle votazioni effettive, non resta molto tempo per sgonfiare la bolla. Ma c’è di più.
Da una parte, chi sono esattamente i candidati seri sulla sicurezza nazionale? Jeb Bush, che pensa che grosso modo una manciata di terroristi può distruggere l’Occidente, un concerto rock alla volta? Rubio, che ha borbottato qualcosa su un conflitto di civiltà?
D’altra parte, praticamente le stesse persone che sostengono che è tempo di essere seri stanno attaccando i democratici perché …. non stanno usando gli slogan giusti, non stanno superando le futili preoccupazioni come quella di cercare di non insultare una religione intera. Ditelo alto e forte: islamradicaleislamradicaleislamradicale. Vedete? Il terrorismo è sconfitto.
Infine, ricordate come diventammo seri dopo l’undici settembre?
Considerato quello che abbiamo visto nel passato, questo potrebbe persino favorire Trump, che può strillare ai terroristi “Siete bruciati!”, oppure Carson, che sarebbe capace di sconfiggerli con l’aiuto del Gesù dei Klingon [1].
Aggiornamento: un promemoria su quanto siano esperti di politica estera Bush e Rubio – vi ricordate Chang, il combattente esemplare? [2]
[1] Un razza aliena della serie televisiva di Star Treck. Pare che fosse dotata anch’essa di un Salvatore, secondo alcuni Gesù stesso, tanto che nella connessione compare un ritratto tra il Gesù dei Klingon e Ben Carson. Mi scuso, ma lo riferisco solo per precisione informativa.
