The Long Haul
As I said in today’s column, nobody who thought Trump would be a disaster should change his or her mind because he won the election. He will, in fact, be a disaster on every front. And I think he will eventually drag the Republican Party into the abyss along with his own reputation; the question is whether he drags the rest of the country, and the world, down with him.
But it’s important not to expect this to happen right away. There’s a temptation to predict immediate economic or foreign-policy collapse; I gave in to that temptation Tuesday night, but quickly realized that I was making the same mistake as the opponents of Brexit (which I got right). So I am retracting that call, right now. It’s at least possible that bigger budget deficits will, if anything, strengthen the economy briefly. More detail in Monday’s column, I suspect.
On other fronts, too, don’t expect immediate vindication. America has a vast stock of reputational capital, built up over generations; even Trump will take some time to squander it.
The true awfulness of Trump will become apparent over time. Bad things will happen, and he will be clueless about how to respond; if you want a parallel, think about how Katrina revealed the hollowness of the Bush administration, and multiply by a hundred. And his promises to bring back the good old days will eventually be revealed as the lies they are.
But it probably won’t happen in a year. So the effort to reclaim American decency is going to have to have staying power; we need to build the case, organize, create the framework. And, of course, never forget who is right.
It’s going to be a long time in the wilderness, and it’s going to be awful. If I sound calm and philosophical, I’m not — like everyone who cares, I’m frazzled, sleepless, depressed. But we need to be stalwart.

Come ho detto nell’articolo di oggi, nessuno che pensava che Trump sarebbe stato un disastro dovrebbe cambiare il suo punto di vista perché ha vinto le elezioni. Di fatto, sarà un disastro su molti fronti. E alla fine io penso che trascinerà il Partito Repubblicano in un abisso assieme alla sua reputazione personale; la questione e se ci trascinerà anche il resto del paese e del mondo.
Ma è importante non aspettarsi che questo accada subito. Esiste la tentazione si prevedere un immediato collasso nell’economia o nella politica estera; ho ceduto a questa tentazione martedì notte, ma ho rapidamente compreso che stavo facendo lo stesso errore degli oppositori della Brexit (dove invece avevo inteso le cose in modo giusto). Dunque ho rivisto subito quella posizione. È almeno possibile che deficit di bilancio più grandi, semmai, rafforzino l’economia per un breve periodo. Suppongo che nell’articolo di lunedì scriverò di più sull’argomento.
Anche su altri fronti, non c’è da aspettarsi immediate rivalse. L’America ha una grande riserva di capitale nella sua reputazione, costruita per generazioni; persino a Trump gli ci vorrà del tempo per sperperarla.
La natura effettivamente tremenda di Trump diventerà evidente col tempo. Ci saranno passaggi negativi, e lui non avrà il minimo indizio sulla risposta da dare; se cercate un parallelo, pensate a come l’uragano Katrina mise in evidenza il vuoto della Amministrazione Bush, e moltiplicatelo per cento. E le sue promesse di riportarci ai bei tempi andati, alla fine si riveleranno per le menzogne che sono.
Ma probabilmente non avverrà in un anno. Dunque, lo sforzo per rivendicare la dignità dell’America è destinato a dover disporre di fiato; abbiamo bisogno di costruire gli argomenti, di organizzare, di creare il modello. E, naturalmente, di non dimenticare mai chi ha ragione.
Sarà un lungo periodo in una landa desolata, e sarà tremendo. Posso apparire calmo e riflessivo, ma non lo sono – come chiunque si preoccupa, sono esausto, insonne, depresso. Ma abbiamo bisogno di essere fortemente convinti.
